Kids and Cams
When I was a kid, I always watched reruns of the original Star Trek series. It was so cool in so many ways, and I am still amazed at how good all the special effects looked considering the time it was made.
One of the coolest things on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise, was the large screen the Captain would use to communicate to the exotic aliens, pirates, and space travelers that populated the other craft that Kirk and his crew would encounter on their missions.
“It’s like an intercom, but you can see each other,” I used to marvel. “That’s so cool!”
Now, many of us have that technology in our own homes, and webcams make video to video communication a thing of the present.
But should your kid have access to a web cam? Could your child’s computer have a camera you are not even aware of? Web cams can be a blast, and can provide a fun way for you and your family to interact with your friends and loved ones when they are far away. But they can also be dangerous, revealing more about the day to day lives of your kids than any parent might feel comfortable with.
Take the time to learn about web cams and how your child may be using one. With a little foresight and some ground rules you’ll be able to make a good decision for the both of you.
