More Social Networking Sites for Tweens

Tweens have found their social networking niche with two fabulous sites.

Check out Disney’s Club Penguin and Imbee.com.

Club Penguin is a social network and virtual world that lets kids, ages 6 to 14, waddle around and make new friends. On settings aimed at its youngest demographic, the game only allows players to communicate using pre-set phrases, making obscenities or other inappropriate content impossible. Even on its settings for older users, the site employs teams of moderators to identify and ban any user spouting less-than-innocent language.

If you’re familiar with Imbee, you’ll know that it’s quite similar to Facebook. The site is designed to bring real-world friendships onto the Web, not vice versa. Only a child’s direct friend can view his or her profile, and parents are alerted whenever a new friend is added.

So parents, the next time your 6-year-old daughter demands a MySpace account, guide her to these safe tween sites. It’s social networking - without the risks.

As always… I send them as I see them.
