As an avid proponent of personal development training, I’ve been studying and practicing the principles of the Universal Law of Attraction for about 8 years now. My first exposure was through a mentoring group I was involved with, in which we were assigned to read the book “Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting: The Astonishing Power of Feelings” by Lynn Grabhorn. In a nutshell, she explained that everything - from you and me to the desk you’re sitting on; from the computer you’re using to the smallest microscopic creatures at the ocean’s floor - is made up of energy. And since energy is vibration, it’s logical to state that everything that exists vibrates.
Grabhorn goes on to explain that although there is only one energy, it vibrates differently - as it attracts and interacts with similar energy. Some energy vibrates quickly from high frequencies and some vibrate slowly from low frequencies. She states that “the energy that flows out from us comes from our highly charged emotions to create highly charged electromagnetic wave patterns of energy, making us powerful - but volatile - walking magnets”. I found this concept intriguing and have been proving it to myself and others ever since. So when “The Secret” came out and catapulted the teachings of the Law of Attraction into public consciousness, I was pleased and excited about the prospects of having this understanding exposed to the mainstream. After all, effecting global change is much easier when participants are involved globally, right?
The difference is that “The Secret” focuses on the vibrations of the mind’s emissions of thought rather than emotion. As the movie, which is in documentary format shows, the thoughts that emanate from our brains have been scientifically proven to create vibrations that have been measured and studied. I found it interesting, however that the movie used very distinct Hollywoodesque music that is very effective in stirring up emotions. Visually powerful scenes of the extent that scribes and scholars went to, in order to keep “The Secret” reserved for only the affluent and powerful, are equally as effective. Overall, the concept of the Law of Attraction is very well described by many respected teachers, philosophers, metaphysicians, personal and business development coaches and authors interviewed in the movie. There is a one-liner that pretty much sums up the movie’s premise: “Thoughts are things”.
Although I DO recommend “The Secret” simply for its entertainment value, I also believe it is effective in introducing beginners to the basic concept of Law of Attraction training. My biggest issue with it - and I’m surely not alone in this opinion - is that the documentary did not stress the need for the “action piece” that is necessary to effect meaningful and permanent change. Many people complained that they kept their thoughts - and some even their emotions - positively charged and focused on a desired thing (whether material or intangible), but nothing happened to change their circumstances. “The Secret” did a great job at explaining and dramatizing what the Law of Attraction IS; however, in my opinion, the movie neglected to explain what it IS NOT.
Law of Attraction is not some elusive magical wand that you wave in the air and Voila! your luxury new life will appear on your doorstep. It is, however the first step toward the journey of your true desires. Some people visualized a life of endless parties in exotic locations, brunches on yachts, 10 carat jewelry, private jets and a full-time staff to help manage the hectic and exciting lifestyle, when their heart’s true desire is simply to make enough money to be comfortable, work less, spend more quality time with family and have the time and financial freedom to enjoy hobbies. The latter would have given birth to much more high frequency vibrations because it’s intimately you - not a randomly convoluted picture of monetary wealth.
If you have not seen “The Secret”, you should. It’s a great place to start your personal development education. Just remember, however that it is just a starting place. There are many other books, movies, seminars, etc. focusing on the Law of Attraction that would help to round out your deep understanding of the principles you’ll learn in “The Secret”.
