Word Spreads about Internet Academy

October 5th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Cyber News, Education

In my zeal to pass along the latest and greatest news about the Internet, I was suddenly struck by a story about cyber schools. I’ve always known that people looked to the Internet to take online classes for a BA, MA, or associate degrees. But now kids as young as 7-years-old are learning how to read and add through online education systems.

Sound intriguing? Read on.

Let me introduce you to Internet Academy (IA). It is Washington state’s first K-12 online public school that runs on the motto, “All it takes is a web connection, a computer, self-management skills, and drive to learn.”

Well said.

Internet Academy was first intended to cater to students who lived in Washington’s Federal Way School District. But word soon spread about its flexible, innovative program and now students are enrolling from other cities, states, even countries. IA’s website says its program is ideal for students participating in band, drama, or other time-sensitive activities. It’s also a great supplement for home-schooled students.

Enrollment is simple. But there is a catch. While IA is a public school, all out-of-state residents must pay a per class tuition fee of $345. Washington-state students can attend for free.

IA is not the first online school I’ve come across. There are quite a few actually and I plan to tell you about all of them.

Parents, maybe we should all embrace this new online education trend. It is obviously the wave of our kids future. But let us not forget the importance of social interaction and good old fashion school yard fun. It’s where all good friendships and first crushes are fostered.

Wouldn’t you agree?
