Teenage alcoholism is the excessive and progressive use of alcohol in adolescents and young adults between the age of 12 and 20. Though consumption of alcohol by people under 21 is illegal, a significant number of teenagers are facing problems of excessive drinking.

The causes of teenage alcoholism are quite different from that of adult alcoholism. While most adults take up drinking when faced with problems, most teenagers start drinking as a celebration, for excitement or under peer pressure. Other causes may include lack of parental support, harsh inconsistent discipline or rejection in any form by the society or family members. Parents’ drinking behavior may also cause a teenager to start drinking early in life. Peer drinking and pressure have also been associated with teenage drinking. Confusion, anxiety, depression and inability to manage one’s emotional state may lead a teenager to excessive drinking. Influence of media, especially advertisements that make alcohol attractive is another cause of teenage alcoholism.

According to researchers, teenagers who begin to drink alcohol before the age of 15 are four times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who drink after the age of 21. It has been estimated that about 3 million teenagers in US suffer from alcoholism. The dangers associated with teenage alcoholism are death, health problems, behavior disorders, and legal implications. Accidents like car crashes, drowning, burns, homicides and often unintentional injuries because of violent behavior have been seen to lead to deaths and suicides. Since the brain of a teenager is still under a developing process, excessive consumption of alcohol can affect not only in its development but also the thinking abilities and memory power. Behavior disorders like violent behavior and impulsiveness are generally seen in teenagers with heavy drinking problems. Since it is illegal to drink under the age of 21, teenagers found with an increased alcohol content in the blood can be penalized or arrested.

Teenagers with warning signs of alcoholism should be immediately checked and treated as this could lead to serious health problems and can scar their future permanently.

Some ethical questions?

These are all asking your opinions on these. I am in no way supporting or not supporting any of these.

1) Should a patient be informed if one of their health care workers has AIDS?
2) Should assisted suicide for the terminally ill be legal?
3) Is abortion ethical in any case you can think of?
4) Who should get the heart transplant: A 50 year old man with a wife and kids or a 20 year old single man?
5) Should marijuana be legalized for medical purposes only?
6) A baby comes in and needs a blood transfusion or she will die. The parents refuse on religious reasons. Should this be allowed?
Ok for the heart transplant there is only one heart and only one gets it. Most of you should know how the transplant system works.
Haha no homework. If it was these are opinion questions. I wouldn’t ask for the answers. They were mentioned in my class and I can tell you it is not illegal.
Jehovah Witnesses often refuse blood transplants for them and their children on religious reasons.

1) Should a patient be informed if one of their health care workers has AIDS? No because there shouldn’t ever be a risk of contracting it, especially if you treat everyone like they have some form of bloodborne pathogen (HIV, Hep B and C, etc.).

2) Should assisted suicide for the terminally ill be legal? I believe it should be as long as the ill person is in their right frame of mind and it can be proven that they are not going to survive. If we can put animals down in a humane fashion, why not individuals who will otherwise suffer the rest of their lives?

3) Is abortion ethical in any case you can think of? Only if it’s a case of rape or incest. Otherwise, I don’t think it’s ethical.

4) Who should get the heart transplant: A 50 year old man with a wife and kids or a 20 year old single man? I’m going to have to say the 20 year old man. A 50 year old man has most likely lived a life he wanted to live, whereas a 20 year old has so much more to experience.

5) Should marijuana be legalized for medical purposes only? I’m on the fence with this one only because some individuals take advantage of the fact they can use it for medicinal purposes. And they also will sell/give it to others. But so do people who have a prescription for pain killers.

6) A baby comes in and needs a blood transfusion or she will die. The parents refuse on religious reasons. Should this be allowed? If it’s the parents wishes, then yes. There’s really nothing anyone else can do.

Its the Law, Not the plant that destroys lives.
Marijuana is not a gateway drug.
As you stated Peer pressure leads kids to trying things.
It is not addicting ,nor has anyone OD on marijuana or died from it.
On the other hand people have been killed by law enforcement,Had their Freedom ,Liberty, independence and other constitutional rights abused and taken away, Their Family’s torn apart, their property confiscated, end up doing more time in jail than a murderer.
When they get out of jail they have a felony criminal record that makes it hard for them to get a good job and get back on their feet.
Their whole life is destroyed by this law.
For what? Their choice to smoke.
This law is for one thing.
Taking the constitutional rights away from Non-Violent American citizens.
The people in jail for having Marijuana.
Are not criminals, they are victims of a unconstitutional law.
They are POW’s soldiers fighting against an oppressive fascist government.
It is more than just someones right to smoke.
Its about our Freedom,Liberty and Independence that are our Constitutional rights.
