Writer Bios

Erin McElveen is a freelance writer and award-winning journalist. In 2005, she and her colleagues at WWL-TV were awarded the George Foster Peabody Award for their groundbreaking news coverage during Hurricane Katrina. Erin now uses her “news nose” to sniff out interesting features for Teen Checkup and her many other online publications. Erin lives in the Boston suburbs with her husband and two daughters.

Joe Nolan is a freelance writer, journalist and editor. In addition to his posts on Teen Checkup, he contributes his visual art, music and culture writing to a number of online and print publications. When he’s not busy at his laptop, Joe is a probably watching a movie or fly fishing for trout.

Sarah Newton is an author, teen advocate, parent confidant, coach, and self-professed adventurer. Sarah tackles tough issues in her ultra-popular blog, The Gen-Y Guide. She also helps parents, schools and companies to connect, engage and motivate young people. A recognized leader in this field, Sarah is passionate about presenting her ideas in useful ways that allow people to guide the behavior of the next generation- without crushing their spirits. Sarah tells it like it is… and that’s why all of us at Teen Checkup think she’s terrific!

Jennie Withers is the author of Hey, Get a Job! A Teen Guide for Getting and Keeping a Job. She is a fourteen year veteran in education at the secondary level teaching Language Arts, Reading, Creative Writing, as well as Technical Reading and Writing. Jennie is also involved with writing curriculum, presenting materials at teacher conferences and online education forums, and volunteering for the YMCA. One of Jennie’s essays appears in The Ultimate Teacher published by HCI publishing. Jennie lives in Idaho with her husband, two daughters and stepson.
